Mythopoetic? Robert Bly prefers the term "expressive men's movement." Some call it Jungian. At any rate, this "Men's Work" or "inner work" is at the heart of the "men's movement" and Menweb.
The real "Men's Work" happens in men's groups and men's gatherings, when men begin to share stories about things that are important in their personal lives. In some areas there are Men's Councils that have monthly meetings, open to newcomers. If you want to know more about what happens there, read the "vision statements" of the council's listed on MenWeb's Men's Councils page.
All around the country -- all around the globe, from the e-mail MenWeb gets -- men are gathering in small groups to share their stories. Some are facilitated, some are "leaderless," some are connected with churches -- but all are places for men to find their vioces and speak their Truths in a "safe space." Ask around. If you can't find one, you can always start one. We can give you lots of help, with our interview with George Taylor, author of Talking With Our Brothers, our section on Men's Groups with excerpts from that book, and our review of books about men's groups.
And on this page we list articles, RealAudio WebCasts of from men's events, featuring people like Robert Bly, Michael Meade, James Hillman and Malidoma Somé and a basic reading list of "classic" books that tell you what "Men's Work" is all about.
Good luck on your journey of exploration! It's an exciting and enriching one. And keep coming back to MenWeb for a "recharge." There's a lot here beyond the "basics," and more is added all the time.
This section was created at the suggestion of Ed Nickson, Seattle, member of the Snohomish Gathering of Men.

Facing the Shadow in Men and Women, with Robert Bly and Marion Woodman.
Oral Traditions' best-seller
There is a mystery around the word "shadow." We throw out part of ourselves in childhood, or put them in a bag; it is those abandoned parts that become the Shadow, which can then act destructively and independently of our will. If we can reclaim these parts much of our vitality and passion returns. Therefore Bly and Woodman challenge us to face the shadow in all areas of our lives. With live music, poems, and a moving Norwegian tale of love, The White Bear King Valamon. 4½ hours, 4 tapes. $29.95.

Character and Destiny, featuring James Hillman and Michael Meade. Recorded live at Seattle Art Museum, October 1996 and based on James Hillman's book The Soul's Code.
Each of us has felt the pull of destiny and the longing to answer our particular calling, a desire rarely nurtured by our families or society. How can we cut through the noise of contemporary culture to respond to the call of our soul?
Hillman and Meade propose that this "inner nobility" often announces itself in the struggles and pathologies that confront us, as well as in our deepest passions. What if we could learn to view our "dysfunctions" in a new way? Could they be messages from our soul--calling us to a more authentic life? Can we, individually and collectively, learn the language of the soul, and live in accordance with its intimations?
3 hours, 2 cassettes. $18.95.

Review - "I have no hesitation in saying that James Hillman's The Soul's Code is one of the most influential books I have read in my life. His underlying message is that true authenticity is being authentic to one's self, one's character and destiny. ... I didn't believe it was possible, but the workshop had even more impact on me than the book! ... the wisdom, the insights and the startling and refreshing views presented on this tape. I urge you to get it and find out for yourself. It's well worth it." Click here to order.
