There is something

about absence-

the lack of geraniums

in terra-cotta pots.

How they summered

as invitation

to people, and a season.

"For lo the winter is past."

The empty pots;

web-filled, chipped-

a cave for the unintentional.

Orphaned in the unspoken

of terra-cotta. Crumbling

in neglect. Rootless,

and barren. Begging

Mother's hands,

the spill of water.
